Candle Care & Common Issues

Candle Care & Common Issues

Following the launch of our very first candles, we thought we'd talk to you about how best to care for them to get the most out of your new scent.

Let's start with some of the more common issues that arise with candles.

Glass Adhesion & 'Wet Spots'
These are caused when the wax cools and shrinks within the container and pulls away from the side. With a multi-layered candle, this is more likely to happen as they require more prep work and have been heated & cooled multiple times during production where as the single scent candles only go through this process once. This will in no way affects the burn ability of the candle, these problems occurs in the most expensive of candles. During burning, the adhesion and 'wet spots' may very well resolve themselves as the wax heats up.

On the image below, you can see a 'wet spot' on the orange layer and glass adhesion on the blue layer. As previously stated, this candle is still high quality and will still have the great burn ability that we expect from all of our candles.

Wick drowning
A wick will drown in the wax when it is too short or is too thin for the size of the vessel. We have carefully designed our candles so that this shouldn't happen. If a candle is knocked while the wax is in a liquid state it can cause a dry wick to become covered in wax, this can usually be resolved on the next burn during lighting. Should that not work, you can pick the dry wax off of the wick once the candle has cooled.

Tunnelling
Tunnelling is caused when the candle is burnt for too short of a time. We recommend burn times of 3-4 hour minimum to allow full melt pool potential. We have found that our candles will tunnel slightly to begin with but corrects itself by the time you get half way through. Should you be concerned about the tunnelling you are experiencing, you can manually scrape the wax into the melt pool but be careful not to drown your wick, do it gradually. Another way to fix tunnelling is to wrap the candle in foil to evenly distribute the heat, this will cause the wax at the top to drip down to the melt pool. Take care when handling a lit candle in all scenarios.

Candle Care & Safety
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Burn candles out of reach of children & pets. Always leave at least 10cm between burning candles. Do not burn candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Only burn this candle on a level heat resistant surface.

Never burn a candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Do not allow the flame to touch the glass. Ensure the wick is upright, above the wax and central before the wax sets. Always trim the wick to 5mm before lighting to avoid smoking and damage to the glass. Glass may become hot during use. Extinguish when 5mm of wax remains and do not relight.

Thank you for reading and we hope you enjoy your new candles! :)
